Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Set Review - Hybrid and Misc.
Both Jamie and TJ are using a rating scale of 10 for this set. Jamie is basing hers on limited play, while TJ is giving more of a holistic rating. Melvin is just being Melvin.
Other Colors
alert heedbonder
Jamie: 5/10 great in vigilance tribal, not super thrilling otherwise. Would be better if this would be a mutate target.
TJ: 5/10 on it's own it's a decent playable. But if your deck has access to more vigilance this will buy a lot of time. hybrid cards are really easy to cast as well so this makes your mana better.
Melvin: I prefer my alerts to be red or at least yellow before I start caring.
cunning nightbonder
Jamie: 2/10 not a limited card.
TJ: 3/10 it's okay. But better in constructed. occasionally someone will get blown out by this card with a counterspell in hand. But I doubt it will be often.
Melvin: My favorite night bonder is my bed’s pillow.
fiend artisan
Jamie: 6/10 great in self mill, ability to upgrade creatures is intriguing.
TJ: 8/10 get your best creature in the deck every time. turn your deck into a powerful toolbox.
Melvin: Is this like a sandwich artisan but uses monsters?
gyruda, doom of depths
Jamie: 8/10 6/6 that find a friend is insane value. No need to force as a companion in draft, but it is so powerful to have in starting deck so worth it to try.
TJ: 8/10 in limited. even better in constructed. This card is on another level of wild. a ton of value for very little cost. and if you are able to run it as a companion this gets out of control quickly.
Melvin: Holy moly, Stromboli! This Gyruda is a fieri card for sure. Welcome to doom, depths and demon krakens.
jegantha, the wellspring
Jamie: 7/10 5/5 good fixer. Companion isn't too tough to pull off in draft.
TJ: 7/10 companions are so silly in draft. the requirement for this one is pretty low and in exchange you get a free card in hand and mana ramp that fixes all your mana. wowza.
Melvin: I feel like a deck with Jegantha is too fragile. Pull one part out and it all collapses.
jubilant skybonder
Jamie: 7/10 so annoying to make removal cost 2 more. protection for better flyers is nice.
TJ: 6/10 good card. better if you have more flying. But not super impactful otherwise.
Melvin: Should have been “Hooo-bilant Skybonder”.
kaheera, the orphanguard
Jamie: 7/10 not to hard to pull off companion in draft. Lord + vigilance is great value.
TJ: 7/10 that's a lot of creature types. You may not be able to pull off the companion ability every time but you'll still be giving a good boost to your team and letting your creatures play offense and defense.
Melvin: Swarmed to death by cuteness.
keruga, the macrosage
Jamie: 8/10 5/4 that draws a few cards on ETB is solid.
TJ: 8/10 This one seems really easy to pull off in limited and you get a huge reward for your effort.
Melvin: They call me the Hip-Hopapotamus. Flows that glow like phosphorous.
Poppin' off the top of this esophagus. Rockin' this metropolis. I'm not a large water-dwelling mammal. Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis?
Did Steve tell you that, perchance?
Mmmph, Steve
lurrus of the dream den
Jamie: 8/10 graveyard value on a good body. Won't be able to companion in limited most likely.
TJ: 7/10 in limited. In constructed this card is turning every format on it's head.
Melvin:Look at that itty bitty kitty!
lutri, the spellchaser
Jamie: 7/10 being able to copy a spell is awesome. Plus what a cutie! 3/2 flash for 3 just fine stats anyway.
TJ: 8/10 in limited. 0/10 in Commander.
Melvin: I’m out of otter puns so I’m just going to clam up fur a while.
obosh, the preypiercer
Jamie: 8/10 effectively a 6/5 for 5 plus interesting effect.
TJ: 8/10 these cards are so darn powerful.
Melvin: More like the Everythingpiercer. Seriously.
proud wildbonder
Jamie: 6/10 fine stats, plus able to sneak through some damage, best in trample tribal.
TJ: 7/10 your trample critters are unstoppable! Great way to push through damage at the end of the game.
Melvin: Is that beast cosplay?
sonorous howlbonder
Jamie: 5/10 great with 5+ menace creature, not all that exciting on its own.
TJ: 6/10 even without menace it requirs three creatures to get in it's way. with any other menace creatures this gets out of hand for your opponent.
Melvin: RIIIIIICCCCOOOOOOLLLLLAAAAAAA!
umori, the collector
Jamie: 7/10 choosing creatures and making them 1 cheaper is great. 4/5 for 4 great stats.
TJ: 6/10 it's got stats above cost and is probably reducing the cost of your creatures. if you can play it as a companion you'll be happy.
Melvin: Oh, you should definitely order the Umori roll, just go easy on the wasabi.
yorion, the sky nomad
Jamie: 8/10 worth playing 60 cards to start with 4/5 flyer. better with lots of good ETB effects.
TJ: 9/10 play the extra twenty it's probably worth it to have access to this always.
Melvin: If you companion this in your draft deck, I’d say yorion to something sweet.
zirda, the dawnwaker
Jamie: 8/10 makes cycling cheaper, can take out a blocker. 3/3 for three just fine.
TJ: 7/10 likely wont be able to companion this in limited. But the effect is powerful in the right deck. especially with all the mentors.
Melvin: I loved playing through the Legend of Zirda, the Dawnwaker, but I never got really good at flying the bird thing.
crystalline giant
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: I’m still not clear about how to use this card.
indatha crystal
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: Put it under your pillow at night to absorb negative energies.
The Ozolith
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: I’d take a shot of the ozolith. Probably makes anise cocktail too.
sleeper dart
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: Do you know how hard it is to put ground up Ambien into a dart?
springjaw trap
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: Saltwater taffy is my preferred springjaw trap.
the lifegain lands
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: You’re complaining about reprint common lands? Get a life!
bonders’ enclave
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: People always forget that George Lazenby is in that cave too.
evolving wilds
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: Could have been Mutating Wilds. Just saying.
The triomes
Jamie:
TJ:
Melvin: I will definitely tri to draft as many of these as I can.
