Kaldheim Set Review - Blue
Jamie will be rating the cards on a scale of 1 to 10 for limited play. Melvin is just being Melvin.
Other Colors
Alrund, god of the cosmos
Jamie: 8/10 solid stats on both sides
Melvin: This is a flip card that’s got a cheap play on one side and a great card draw on the other. That makes this an alrund great card in any blue draft deck.
alrund’s epiphany
Jamie: 7/10 time walk for 6 is appealing plus two flyers
Melvin: Alrund’s epiphany was that he had too many damn birds.
annul
Jamie: 4/10 sideboard card
Melvin: Annul? More like Azero in limited.
Ascendant spirit
Jamie: 8/10 build your own bomb!
Melvin: Great card! This spirit is really top shelf.
augury raven
Jamie: 6/10 possible 3/3 flyer on turn 3
Melvin: Stealing a shield? That’s so raven!
avalanche caller
Jamie: 7/10 late game make a bunch of 4/4 lands to attack with, yes!
Melvin: This is so out of date. I’m looking more for an Avalanche Texter or Avalanche DMer.
behold the multiverse
Jamie: 5/10 scry 2, draw two split across two turns for two mana seems great
Melvin: As an Easter egg, count all the Spider-mans in the card art. I found three.
berg strider
Jamie: 7/10 4/4 probably keep a creature tapped for a while is a great deal for 5 mana
Melvin: Berg is just short for iceberg. I see that WoTC’s getting lazy with the card names. They should be careful though, they’re already on thin ice with a lot of the community.
bind the monster
Jamie: 8/10 cheap removal, won't always need to take damage if the creature is already tapped
Melvin: Yes, bind it. Give it more cheese.
brinebarrow intruder
Jamie: 5/10 great for the 2nd spell matters deck
Melvin: Playing around this card properly in limited will be a real pickle.
cosima, god of the voyage
Jamie: 7/10 solid stats for 3 mana + card draw ability, the vehicle is scary good
Melvin: That’s a heck of a lot of rules text. We need to slow down, cosima slow reader.
cosmos charger
Jamie: 8/10 foretell cheaper and at instant speed on a flying body
Melvin: Of course it’s a charger. Did you expect it to carry cash?
cyclone summoner
Jamie: 7/10 seven mana is a lot but the effect is powerful
Melvin: He summons cyclones, destroys tempests, and breaks wind.
depart the realm
Jamie: 5/10 being able to get rid of auras is useful
Melvin: If the realm starts to suck, just bounce.
disdainful stroke
Jamie: 4/10 sideboard card
Melvin: It only hits expensive spells, but it takes different strokes for different cards.
draugr thought-thief
Jamie: 5/10 3/2 with upside
Melvin: I’m not dumb, I’m just a repeated victim of thought-thieves.
frost augur
Jamie: 6/10 heavy snow permanent decks will love this
Melvin: I want to call this card Fraugur. It needs a nickname that really jumps.
frostpeak yeti
Jamie: 5/10 paying to make unblockable is a nice late game mana sink
Melvin: Someone should tell this yeti that frosting your peaks is so 90’s.
frostpyre arcanist
Jamie: 5/10 filler - more of a constructed card
Melvin: I read “frostpyre” as “frosty-pie” and now I’m hungry.
giant’s amulet
Jamie: 6/10 4/4 hexproof for 5 seems decent
Melvin: To a giant, it’s an amulet, to a dwarf, it’s a coffee table.
glimpse of the cosmos
Jamie: 5/10 being able to do this 2 times is some nice value
Melvin: Glimpse the Cosmos, See the Beyond, Look to the Future, Don’t Stop Thinkin’ ‘bout Tomorrow.
graven lore
Jamie: 7/10 most likely scry 2-3 at least plus draw three is good value
Melvin: I thought it was too easy to just place runes on paper or armor, so I went looking for a boulder medium.
icebind pillar
Jamie: 7/10 tapping for 1 mana is a nuisance for your opponent
Melvin: I’m having a hard time keeping track of what requires snow mana to do stuff, so on my spreadsheet, I’m putting Icebind Pillar in my Snow Column.
icebreaker kraken
Jamie: 7/10 expensive, but possibly 4-5 mana cheaper seems like a fine deal
Melvin: I try to bring one of these to parties, just to loosen people up at the beginning.
inga rune-eyes
Jamie: 7/10 3/3 scry three is solid already, can set up to draw 3 on death
Melvin: She dated Basri Ket for a bit, remember? Everyone loved the power couple BasInga.
karfell harbringer
Jamie: 5/10 decent blocker plus lost of foretell, instants and sorceries to make mana
Melvin: Remember Vodalian Arcanist from Dominaria? Karfell Harbinger has really taken a step down from there.
littjara kinseekers
Jamie: 6/10 not a hard setup to get the bonus
Melvin: “Hey, which one of us is Greg, again?”
mists of littjara
Jamie: 7/10 shrinking a creature for 2 mana is a decent deal
Melvin: On the plus side, the mists do have a nice soothing menthol component that really help open your airways.
mistwalker
Jamie: 6/10 changeling solid for tribal plus being able to pump for fairly cheap
Melvin: It’s got wings, it can fly, but we’re supposed to be impressed that it can “walk on mist”? Come on. I don’t brag about not sinking into shag carpet.
mystic reflection
Jamie: 8/10 can set up some scary turns for the foretell cost
Melvin: “On your end step, I cast Mystic Reflection targeting my Terror of the Peaks. Then I cast Goblin Wizardry.”
orvar, the all-form
Jamie: 9/10 instants and sorceries copy other creatures?! busted
Melvin: So in draft, pack one, pick one, I talk this orvar anything else in the pack.
pilfering hawk
Jamie: 5/10 looting for 1 mana is a good deal
Melvin: I hope its name is Hudson.
ravenform
Jamie: 9/10 versatile removal with cheap foretell
Melvin: Ravenform - the classy but sensible underwear line for ravens
reflections of littjara
Jamie: 6/10 expensive do nothings on first turn cast don't really excite me
Melvin: Must I pretend that I am someone else for all time, when will my reflection show, who I am inside?
run ashore
Jamie: 5/10 pricey plus opponent getting choice for 1st option isn't super exciting
Melvin: When we play Sea of Thieves, this is how TJ steers our pirate ship. Just kidding, we don’t let him steer anymore.
rune of flight
Jamie: 6/10 replaces itself right away, cheap evasion
Melvin: Please wait until your boarding group is called before putting on your rune, and let those who might need assistance or more time to put on their runes go before you. Thank you for flying with Valkyrie Eagle.
saw it coming
Jamie: 6/10 foretelling and being able to counter for 2 is great
Melvin: What happens when you see Saw It Coming coming?
strategic planning
Jamie: 5/10 filler
Melvin: “Look, if we’re going to share this Minecraft server, we really need to plan out where we want to put our houses before we just start digging.”
undersea invader
Jamie: 5/10 enters tapped makes it less exciting but a 5/6 for 6 is fine stats
Melvin: Just look at the world around you, right here on the ocean floor.
Such murderous things surround you, what more is you lookin' for?
