Theros Beyond Death: Set Review - Green
Both Jamie and TJ are using a rating scale of 10 for this set. Jamie is basing hers on limited play, while TJ is giving more of a holistic rating. Melvin is just being Melvin.
Other colors
arasta of the endless web
Jamie: 7/10 Cheaper mammoth spider with upside!
TJ: 8/10 I would draft with without the triggered ability. add to it that your opponent will probable make a spider or two. and almost any kill spell will produce a spider. I like this a lot.
Melvin: You can explore the endless web, just clear your browser history when you're done.
the binding of the titans
Jamie: 3/10 Return strong creature from your graveyard, but have to wait a bit. With all the escape the exile might be nice. Not really looking to play this in limited.
TJ: 2/10 Seems like a lot of words to accomplish very little.
Melvin: Maybe they ate too much cheese?
chainweb aracnir
Jamie: 6/10 Seems helpful but the escape cost is real. probably not going to be able to get this down early enough to really help against an aggressive flyer deck.
TJ: 6/10. Does a lot for mana, then does a lot for 5 mana.
Melvin: Some spiders are more into chains than silk. Don't kink-shame them.
destiny spinner
Jamie: 7/10 2/3 for two is great value plus the added bonuses. Enchantment build-around, making big hasty land each turn is enticing, or can be blocker if needed. I dig it.
TJ: 9/10 The stats are wild already for a two mana creature. add to the fact that its an army in a can in the late game? This card is wild.
Melvin: A destiny spinner is steal cheaper than one of those Peleton bikes. They're like $2500!
dryad of the ilysian grove
Jamie: 8/10 Ramp! big booty! fixing! huzzah!
TJ: 8/10 Real good in limited, can play a 6 mana spell on turn 4 under the right conditions. plus it fixes your mana. oh. and it's a 2/4 for 3.
Melvin: Beware his low hanging fruit.
the first iroan games
Jamie: 9/10 That’s a heck of a lot of value for 3 mana.
TJ: 6/10 Honestly this card does a lot, and it's probably better than I think, but it feels real slow.
Melvin: For many, it was the last Iroan Games.
gift of strength
Jamie: 5/10 Decent combat trick, reach nice bonus.
TJ: 4/10 Classic trick. Still boring.
Melvin: When I can't recognize the creature, I kind of lose perspective on if it's 'giant' or not. How big is it normally?
hydra’s growth
Jamie: 6/10 This could get out of control quickly, especially on a trample dude. However, decent enchantment removal in set and asking to be 2 for 1’ed.
TJ: 6/10 Better delete your uber app, because this creature only lyfts.
Melvin: If growth last for longer than four hours, call a Nyx physician.
hyrax tower scout
Jamie: 5/10 3/3 for 3 is nice filler, being able to untap a big green dude after an attack is an acceptable bonus.
TJ: 4/10 Turn your attacker into a blocker like a magician.
Melvin: I'm happy to see this card, because I just ran out of Tower Scout cookies and need to order more.
ilysian caryatid
Jamie: 6/10 Mana dork that scales is great, but 1 toughness makes vulnerable.
TJ: 8/10 Mana creature that taps for any color and scales into the game to produce two mana. This seems well worth the two mana investment.
Melvin: But can it caryatune?
inspire awe
Jamie: 1/10 Expensive fog with stipulation no thanks.
TJ: 1/10 Four mana!?
Melvin: I would have preferred someone be inspired to create a playable fog.
klothys’s design
Jamie: 5/10 Amazing in mono green, not playable in 2 color decks probably. being able to buff entire team is enticing, but tough to know how powerful this will actually be.
TJ: 4/10 If it was an instant I would rate it higher. good in the right deck. bad everywhere else.
Melvin: I saw Klothys's Design, and it opened up my eyes. No one's gonna drag you up to get into the light where you belong.
loathsome chimera
Jamie: 5/10 Not a fan of the tiny butts, BUT extra value with escape is nice.
TJ: 4/10 Dies to anything, then comes back and dies to almost anything.
Melvin: With all these chimeras in the set, I suppose you'll love some and you'll loathsome.
mantle of the wolf
Jamie: 7/10 Build your own swole boi and get back value once it's dead.
TJ: 8/10 Card is nuts makes your creature giant then makes two threats.
Melvin: So in Eldraine, a wolf would dress a a human, but on Theros, people dress as a wolf?
moss viper
Jamie: 6/10 Cheap, efficient, great to block opponents big dumb dudes.
TJ: 6/10 As basic as it gets.
Melvin: A 1/1 death touch is a great blocker for ground bombs. So I suppose you could think of it as a win shield viper.
mystic repeal
Jamie: 8/10 Enchantment heavy set.. this will be powerful.
TJ: 8/10 Removal for the second biggest type in the set? I'll rarely dislike having one of these.
Melvin: That is one scary looking avocado monster.
nessian boar
Jamie: 8/10 Could be a finisher to get the rest of your team through, or take out opponents best creatures. Opponent could draw quite a few cards though, so best be played end game.
TJ: 8/10 Weird that this might be the best mill card in the set. This card is huge and protects your other creatures on top of it.
Melvin: If you get this in your pack 1 draft booster and slam it, is that pulled pork?
nessian hornbeetle
Jamie: 7/10 This boi could get real swole. Bear with upside and infinite potential. I love this card! 2 drops that scale with the game are the best.
TJ: 6/10 A bear that gets better in the late game. It's super slow but in a grindy game just gets out of control.
Melvin: I had a pet one of those named Ringo, but it was more of a drumbeatle.
nessian wanderer
Jamie: 5/10 Fairly unexciting.
TJ: 5/10 Jamie nailed it with eloquence.
Melvin: For a wanderer, he's really hoofing it.
nexus wardens
Jamie: 5/10 Great blocker, must include against flyer decks plus upside for enchantments.
TJ: 5/10 A fine value blocker for the curve.
Melvin: Even satyrs in Theros love to do the Captain Morgan pose.
nylea, keen-eyed
Jamie: 9/10 Makes creatures cheaper, finds creatures, 5/6 indestructible for 4... pushes into heavy green only downside.
TJ: 9/10 Whoa. cast things cheap and use that extra mana to fill your hand? Nylea is outta control
Melvin: More like Nylea, Bikini-Eyed, gggrrrowwwl!
nylea’s forerunner
Jamie: 6/10 5/3 trample for 5 unexciting... but granting whole team trample in big green is alluring.
TJ: 8/10 Even if I'm not attacking with it, trample is really solid to throw onto your board.
Melvin: Serious question. Is it wearing lipstick?
nylea’s huntmaster
Jamie: 6/10 4/3 for 4 not exciting really, but being able to give a potentially huge power boost to an evasive creature is a decent upside.
TJ: 6/10 Reasonable creature with a reasonable ability.
Melvin: Do centaurs have twice as many leg days at the gym?
nylea’s intervention
Jamie: 2/10 Not a limited card really... maybe use if splashing or decent sideboard against heavy flyer deck.
TJ: 6/10 I’m limited its super blah. But read it again for constructed. Doesn't say basic lands. Go wild.
Melvin: Nylea's intervention involved being confronted with her animal hoarding and letting them go.
nyx herald
Jamie: 8/10 3/4 Trample for 3! or can grant ability to other creature. this card is awesome.
TJ: 8/10 This card is wild. I thought it said "another creature" until I saw Jamie’s write up.
Melvin: I wish my undercarriage had glittery stars in it like that. Reminds me of my rave days.
nyxbloom ancient
Jamie: 7/10 5/5 Trample for 6 and a butt load of mana. Elemental synergies, big green dude. Not sure how much big mana you really need in limited. This is a constructed powerhouse probably.
TJ: 10/10 This card is laughably over the top. Is it good in limited? Who cards, probably. But this is just outlandishly silly.
Melvin: To be renamed "Nyxbloom Accident" when this gets banned in commander and other formats.
nyxborn colossus
Jamie: 5/10 Big dumb green dude.
TJ: 5/10 Tough mana cost, but good stats for a vanilla.
Melvin: It might be time to dye his beard, because his roots are showing.
omen of the hunt
Jamie: 3/10 Filler, play in enchantment heavy decks or decent if splashing. Sacrificing to scry seems decent, but price is not cheap.
TJ: 8/10 Mana ramp and mana fixing plus synergy? I love this.
Melvin: Looks like she was hunting for edibles.
pheres-band brawler
Jamie: 7/10 4/4 for 6 not super happy about those stats, but being able to fight-- a may ability- is obviously strong. this would be BUSTED at 4 mana, still an include in any green deck for 6 mana.
TJ: 6/10 It's a little spendy but its pretty good.
Melvin: I like that with the return of Theros they decided to get the Pheres-band back together.
plummet
Jamie: 4/10 Sideboard.
TJ: 4/10 Put it in the side cuz I'm bored.
Melvin: So that's why I saw a dragon strapped the front of Nylea's Ford F150 yesterday.
relentless pursuit
Jamie: 5/10 The stronger the creatures, the happier you will be. Lot of times this will be a 3 mana draw two, which seems powerful in green. Instant would be bonkers, but sorcery is filler.
TJ: 4/10 I don't really love effects like this. But hitting two different permanent types helps a lot.
Melvin: Don't play games if someone's following you. Relentless pursuit is never trivial.
renata, called to the hunt
Jamie: 9/10 Buffs all creatures, will be quite swole in mono green. Sign me up.
TJ: 9/10 This card gets out of hand.
Melvin: I'm Melvin, Called to the Indian Buffet for lunch.
return to nature
Jamie: 8/10 Seems like the set to run 1-2 copies main deck every time. You will always find a good target.
TJ: 8/10 Weird to think that I would mainboard this but I definitely would.
Melvin: Finally, nature got the point.
setessan champion
Jamie: 8/10 Enchantment heavy decks this is a powerhouse! get swole and draw all the cards is dreamy.
TJ: 9/10 big toughness to start. grows and refills your hand? This card is super good. great engine and payoff.
Melvin: The Nexus Wardens knew they could never beat the real champion of the Captain Morgan pose competition.
setessan petitioner
Jamie: 4/10 Fairly meh... I guess late game could be a huge life gain, but playing on curve is vastly unexciting.
TJ: 2/10 Lifegain is for nerds.
Melvin: Yeah, that's cool. Just throw that fruit anywhere.
setessan skirmisher
Jamie: 4/10 Filler could be great in heavy enchantment decks.
TJ: 5/10 Reasonable beater. fills the curve.
Melvin: Skirmisher? I barely knew her.
setessan training
Jamie: 5/10 Enchantment synergies, replaces itself right away and grants evasion.
TJ: 5/10 Replaces itself and adds trample. I'm in.
Melvin: She's finally getting her green belt training! That's a corporate joke and I'm sorry if you got that right away.
skola grovedancer
Jamie: 5/10 Build-around for graveyard synergies, escape enabler. At worst a bear.
TJ: 5/10 I wanted to rate this card lower for having silly abilities. But Jamie is right, it's reasonable.
Melvin: What a feeling. Bein's believin'. I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my grove.
voracious typhon
Jamie: 8/10 4/4 for 4. That’s fun to say, good value and comes back late game as a 7/7 for 7.
Melvin: Yo dawg, I heard you liked snakes, so I put snakes on your snakes.
warbringer blessing
Jamie: 7/10 Seems great in big green, buff the butt for the fight and get to keep the big booty. I like.
Melvin: Try to that enchantment above the waist or you might accidentally give yourself a briar tuck, and that wouldn't be merry.
wolfwillow haven
Jamie: 4/10 Will play in green devotion decks probably, the flexibility of turning into a wolf late game is sort of nice, but expensive.
Melvin: Wolfwillows are cute, but have you seen puppypoppies?
