Kaldheim Set Review - Green
Jamie will be rating the cards on a scale of 1 to 10 for limited play. Melvin is just being Melvin.
Other Colors
arachnoform
Jamie: 5/10tribal will care about this.. otherwise fairly underwhelming, there are 11 flyers in the set
Melvin: Spider-elf, spider-elf. Never ever gets left on a shelf. Can he swing, from a web? Do we care, they’re an elf. Look-out! Here comes spider-elf.
battle mammoth
Jamie: 7/10 big body that replaces itself when its removed. heck yes.
Melvin: I’m not going to play this because I know Legolas is just going to kill it with two stupid arrows or something and then surf down its back.
blessing of frost
Jamie: 6/10- if you spend 4 snow mana on this and get to draw 4 cards, thats magical Christmas Land. It's going to be more like 2 counters and maybe draw 2, which is still fantastic
Melvin: Nothing Cold Can Stay
blizzard brawl
Jamie: 7/10 better prey upon in a heavy snow deck
Melvin: WoW! That bear is some kind of Diablo! But the fight isn’t over-watch!
boreal outrider
Jamie: 7/10 payoff for being in snow but sort of fragile
Melvin: She’s out riding to a stag party.
BROKEN WINGs
Jamie: 4/10 sideboard card most likely, there are a ton of targets where this could be main deckable, especially if your deck is weak to flyers
Melvin: How fake! That owl just tucked that spear under its arm and is pretending it got stabbed.
elderleaf mentor
Jamie: 5/10 fine filler, more desireable in a green white go wide deck
Melvin: If you have an elderleaf, is it still appropriate to turn a new one?
elven bow
Jamie: 6/10 having reach on a big fattie to protect against flyers is nice
Melvin: Or elven curtsy, or just an elven high five.
elvish warmaster
Jamie: 8/10 fantastic in elf tribal.. the pump is a bit expensive but it's on a bear
Melvin: I’m more familiar with the Elvish Omlette-Barmaster.
esika, god of the tree
Jamie: 5/10 a mana dork with a big booty, 5 color snow decks will want this, but otherwise not super exciting
Melvin: Her hands are pouring rainbows. Are we sure it’s a tree she’s the god of, and not a certain other notable piece of vegetation?
esika’s chariot
Jamie: 8/10 KITTIES! solid stats for 4 mana, plus makes a copy of a token on attack. I wouldn't pass this.
Melvin: The Kaldheim driver service, “Upurr” quickly went bankrupt after people realized using cats was an awful idea.
fynn, the fangbearer
Jamie: 6/10 1/3 deathtouch is solid... probably won't win with poision counters.. but with some pump spells and evasion you could live the dream!
Melvin: Poison counters??? I thought we were fynnished with that nonsense.
glittering frost
Jamie: 5/10 3 to 5 color snow decks will want this... otherwise not super worth it just for the ramp
Melvin: All that glitters is not gold. Because it’s frost. Seriously, it’s all frost.
gnottvold recluse
Jamie: 5/10 powerful spider with a tiny butt, there are fewer flyers in this set so I'm not really looking to run this unless I need filler
Melvin: Oh great, Australian cards.
grizzled outrider
Jamie: 5/10 big elf! 5/5's are tough to deal with in this set. I'm looking to play 1-2 of these for the top of my curve
Melvin: Together, they quest in search of the fabled “pic-a-nic basket”.
guardian gladewalker
Jamie: 5/10 filler, nice to buff up something and use this as sac fodder?
Melvin: I like this as a changeling, because it makes the gladewalker a plugin to any green deck.
horizon seeker
Jamie: 5/10 if I'm desperate for fixing I will grab one of these... There are a ton of 2/1's though so expect this to trade down.
Melvin: Or a Verizon Signal Seeker. All this hiking and still no bars.
icehide troll
Jamie: 6/10 snow payoff... attacking with a 4/3 indestructible is going to get annoying for your opponent fairly quickly.
Melvin: Icehide sounds better that frostbutt.
in search of greatness
Jamie: 2/10 no. don't do it. this is not for limited. it's a trap!
Melvin: Is that squirrel going to boop the wolf’s snoot! That’s nuts!
jaspera sentinel
Jamie: 4/10 if I am desperate for fixing or in elves matters wanting some ramp, I would run this. But it's not great!
Melvin: So a sentinel’s job is to keep watch, but they’ll mostly be watching themselves be the last card drafted in every pack.
jorn, god of winter
Jamie: 8/10 Jorn gets out of control quickly... even untapping a bunch of snow lands and using mana in a mana sink is powerful. The equipment is even more powerful! Obvsiously Want lots of snow permanents to make this work.
Melvin: Was he Jorn to be wild, or Jorn to run free? Maybe it’s Jorney and not the destination.
king harald’s revenge
Jamie: 4/10 I would be more excited if this was a true lure effect, but the creatures only needs to be blocked by one creature.
Melvin: I had some of that lembas elf bread from a sketchy push cart vendor, and I got King Harald’s Revenge for like three days.
kolvori, god of kinship
Jamie: 5/10 great if you can draft a bunch of legndaries, but that probably won't happen, the artifact is too retrictive for me to want to draft it highly.
Melvin: So a god, a snake, a wolf, and a bear, walk into a bar….
littjara glade-warden
Jamie: 6/10 nice mana sink to have late game, changeling type will help with tribal synergies
Melvin: I’m pretty sure this is a mythic uncommon, so don’t pass it. It’s litt AF.
mammoth growth
Jamie: 5/10 i'm into this because of foretell... more interested in playing in a deck with a bunch of trample creatures or evasive threats
Melvin: So the internet pills do work!
masked vandal
Jamie: 6/10 late game get ride of an artifact or enchantment is solid
Melvin: Why do shapeshifters need to wear masks?
old-growth troll
Jamie: 8/10 triple green is tough but this is a LOT of value for that cost. Big troll with trample, and if dies, becomes another big troll with trample. I'm in.
Melvin: If the growth gets too much, he can just use Axe body spray.
path to the world tree
Jamie: 6/10 fixing for 3+ color decks, and with duals it's not too tough to activate.
Melvin: The line looks pretty long on that path. Is there any way I can get a fast pass to the world tree?
ravenous lindwurm
Jamie: 6/10 love me 6/6's for 6 that gain life. This is a pain to deal with. I'm looking for 1-2 of these for my top end in green, and with a bit of ramp, you're opponents will be saying OH NO
Melvin: I really enjoy lindwurm truffles. Or is that something else?
realmwalker
Jamie: 6/10 powerful effect but will need to draft a lot of the same creature type for this to truly shine. 8-10 of the same creature would make this FANTASTIC.
Melvin: Please take note of the creepy giant head statues in the background of the art.
rootless yew
Jamie: 6/10 this is bff's with Ravenous Lindwurm... a big threat that finds another big threat is solid
Melvin: Yew love to see it.
roots of wisdom
Jamie: 5/10 this is mill 3 draw 1 no matter what. probably filler unless you have some killer elves you are wanting to return from your graveyard.
Melvin: The wisdom is not drafting this card or playing it.
rune of might
Jamie: 5/10 replaces itself right away and pumps the creature... putting this on a 6/6 would be great.
Melvin: Might be good.
sarulf’s packmate
Jamie: 7/10 I want to draft as many of these as possible! Value!
Melvin: Okay, who gave the wolf a vape pen?
sculptor of winter
Jamie: 5/10 ramp in snow
Melvin: Honestly, she’s pretty happy if she gets to sculpt anything that’s not a swan for bar mitzvahs.
snakeskin veil
Jamie: 5/10 being able to give hexproof for 1 green mana is solid
Melvin: If you’ve already got the boots and the belt, a snakeskin veil is a nice use of the leftovers.
spirit of the aldergard
Jamie: 6/10 snow payoff, this can get pretty powerful with a ton of snow lands and snow creatures. Also fixing for the 3+ color snow decks.
Melvin: The spirit was known to roam the woods, searching for the small boy that left him there years ago, along with the pig, the owl, and the rabbit, which he subsequently ate.
struggle for skemfar
Jamie: 6/10 decent removal especially with the foretell
Melvin: It’s okay, you can kiss.
toski, bearer of secrets
Jamie: 8/10 this with some evasive creatures can get out of control quickly. I like drawing cards!
Melvin: Look at this cute little peanut, with his pistachio fur and hazel eyes. Indestructible makes him a tough little walnut too. I’d probably pine pretty hard if I had to pass this little pecan.
tyvar kell
Jamie: 9/10 building an army of deathtouch elves is pretty terrifying... unsurprisingly, the ult will just end the game. Planeswalkers, am I right?
Melvin: “My abs are so sexy, I’m legally required to cover them in public.”
vorinclex, monstrous raider
Jamie: 9/10 6/6 trample haste is enough of a threat, more counters is just icing on the cake.
Melvin: Ask your doctor about Vorinclex.
